I’m 40 years old and I’m afraid.
I’m supposed to be successful and have life figured out. The last few years though have been rough. I’ve been divorced, fired and lost a career. Now as a single parent, I’m delivering pizzas to make ends meet, feed and clothe my four kids. I’m hanging on by a thread.
But I did… (hang on), that is.
I got my real estate license in a month. (Pain has a way of highly motivating you.) I’m beginning the long slog to rebuild my life.
I’m dead broke though. The house has been sold and the equity just paid off some bills. I have zero retirement funds except a minuscule amount in social security.
I remarry and now we are raising seven wonderful kids which means more mouths to feed and bodies to clothe. Thank goodness for my faith or I might just give up.
We are working hard and building a modest real estate business. A few years in we make a lifestyle sacrifice, scrape together a few bucks, and buy our first rental property – a 600 sq ft studio condo. It seems like a monumental stretch and again I’m afraid.
As I look back on those years I remember how hard they were and I realize how my challenges didn’t kill me, just made me stronger.
“Money lives on the other side of fear.”
Gary Keller, Billionaire
Let me fast forward to the present. Glenda and I own multiple rentals and our tenants are helping us to pay them down at an expedited pace. Our tenant’s rents will pay them off in the next 8-10 years and we will have a fully funded multi-million dollar re-firement! That’s right, re-firement; no retiring for this couple.
“From Bust to Booyah Baby!” Zero to a multi-million dollar portfolio!
“Every person who invests in well-selected real estate in a growing section of a prosperous community adopts the surest and safest method of becoming independent, for real estate is the basis of wealth.”
President Theodore Roosevelt
Keller said, “money lives on the other side of fear.” We agree. We are a living testament to that truth. He also said this, “In truth, fear isn’t all bad. Don’t be afraid of fear. Respect it, keep going, and move past it.” A look at the possibilities for building wealth may just help you move past your fears, hesitations or doubts and build generational wealth.
“Ninety percent of all millionaires become so through owning real estate. More money has been made in real estate than in all industrial investments combined. The wise young man or wage earner of today invests his money in real estate.”
Andrew Carnegie, billionaire industrialist
Recently our 12-year old grandson asked me, “Papa are you a millionaire?” It was the first time anyone had asked me that directly. Stunned, I hesitated for a moment. The answer broke like the dawn, “Yes buddy, I am a millionaire.” “Really” was his rapid response, “how cool!” “I want to be a millionaire.” We began his mentorship that afternoon.
There is an Ancient Chinese Proverb, “The best time to plant a tree and enjoy it’s shade was 20 years ago. The next best time is today.” The best time to overcome your fears and transform your family’s destiny was 20 years ago. The next best time is today.
Start by overcoming your fears. Shakespeare said, “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.”
